Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Fun Fall Turkey Wreath

Step 1: Prepare the Paper Plate

  • Start by cutting out the center of the paper plate, leaving just the outer rim. This rim will be the base of the wreath.

  • Optional: Paint or color the rim brown or orange to create a festive background for your turkey feathers.

Safety Tip: Have an adult or an older child cut out the center of the paper plate.

Step 2: Create the Feathers

  • Cut feather shapes from construction paper in fall colors. Aim for around 10-20 feathers for a full look, but feel free to make as many as you like.

  • For a fun twist, have kids write what they’re thankful for on each feather. This adds a personal touch to the wreath and makes it a meaningful Thanksgiving decoration.

Step 3: Attach the Feathers

  • Arrange the feathers around the outer edge of the paper plate rim, creating a fan effect to look like turkey feathers.

  • Once you’re happy with the arrangement, glue each feather in place, making sure they’re securely attached and slightly overlapping.

If you are using liquid glue be sure to give it plenty of time to dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Make the Turkey’s Face

  • Using brown construction paper, cut out a round shape for the turkey’s face.

  • Draw or glue on the eyes, add a small triangle of yellow or orange for the beak and a red wattle below the beak.

  • Attach the turkey’s face to the bottom of the wreath, with the feathers spreading out around it.

We didn't have any brown construction paper on hand, so we used a brown paper bag instead. When it comes to these crafts, the best practice is to use whatever you have.

Step 5: Add Final Details

  • Decorate the wreath with any extra embellishments, like glitter glue around the feathers or stickers to add color and sparkle.

  • Let the wreath dry completely before hanging it up.

Creative Ideas to Make Your Turkey Wreath Extra Special

There are plenty of ways to personalize your turkey wreath and make it truly unique! Here are some ideas for adding more personality to your turkey:

  • Mix Up the Feathers: Use different materials for the feathers, such as pom poms, felt, or even real leaves. This adds texture and makes each feather look unique.

  • Add a Hat or Bow: Give your turkey a little extra character by adding a pilgrim hat, bow tie, or even a bow on the top of its head.

  • Decorate with Buttons and Glitter: Use buttons, glitter glue, or even small pom-poms to decorate the feathers or rim of the wreath, adding color and shine.

  • Make a Family Wreath: For a fun twist, make each feather represent a family member, with each person’s name or something they’re thankful for written on it.

  • Use Patterned Paper: Instead of solid colors, try using patterned scrapbook paper for the feathers to give the wreath a more decorative and colorful look.
