Step-by-Step Instructions to Make a Construction Paper Snowman

Step 1: Cut Out the Snowman's Body

  • Start by cutting out three circles from the white construction paper for the snowman’s body. You can make the circles progressively smaller or keep them the same size.

  • Pro Tip: To make the circles, we recommend tracing something circular like a plate or a bowl so you have the perfect circle shape to cut out.

  • Glue the circles together, starting with the largest at the bottom and working upward. Press each circle down firmly to ensure they stay in place.

Step 2: Put Together the Snowman’s Face

  • Cut out two small black circles for the eyes, they don't have to be perfect circles the slight unevenness adds character and personality to the snowman's face. Once you have the eyes cut out, glue them onto the snowman's face

  • Use a black marker to draw a smiling mouth under the eyes.

  • For the nose, cut a small triangle out of orange construction paper for a carrot nose. Glue it down between the eyes and mouth.

Step 3: Give the Snowman a Hat and Scarf

  • Cut a small rectangle from black construction paper for the hat’s brim and a square for the top part of the hat. Glue these just above the eyes on the snowman’s head. We placed our hats a little off to the side to add a bit of personality and added red construction paper in the middle.

  • For the scarf, cut a strip of colorful construction paper (red, blue, or green) and wrap it around the neck area. You can add two small pieces of paper hanging down for a more realistic scarf effect or just leave it plain as we did.

Step 4: Add Buttons and Arms

  • Draw or glue three small black circles down the middle of the snowman’s body for buttons.

  • For arms, cut thin strips of brown or black paper and glue them on each side of the middle circle, making them stick out to look like twigs.

Fun Ways to Customize Your Snowman Craft

The great thing about this construction paper snowman is that it can be easily customized, making it a wonderful activity for kids to express their unique style. Here are a few ideas to add even more personality:

  • Use Patterned Paper: Try using patterned construction paper for the scarf or hat to add texture and variety.

  • Create a Background: Glue your snowman onto blue or black construction paper and add snowy ground, some winter trees, or even paper snowballs nearby.

  • Dress It Up: Instead of a classic top hat, let kids make earmuffs with small circles and a strip connecting them, or add a festive winter hat and mittens.

  • Make a Snow Family: Cut out multiple snowmen in different sizes to make a family! Kids can create a “parent” snowman or “baby” snowman and even add their own custom details to each.

Also, don't feel like you have to limit your kids to just using construction paper. We created this snowman with the idea that anyone can make it with the few materials that they have around the house, but if you have additional supplies, feel free to add them. Pom poms, glitter, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes can all be used to add some extra fun and flair to your snowman.
