Winter is the perfect time to get creative with your kids, especially during the holiday season. Crafting not only keeps little hands busy but also adds a fun, personal touch to your holiday decor. Today, we’re making an adorable Santa Claus puppet out of a simple paper bag!
This fun and easy craft is perfect for kids of all ages and uses materials you likely already have at home. Your kids will love creating their very own Santa to bring the magic of Christmas to life.
Materials Needed
The craft only requires two main materials: a paper bag and construction paper; however, feel free to get creative and use additional supplies if you have them.
Optional Supplies: Glitter, yarn, felt, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, or pom poms
Step by Step Tutorial on How to make a Paper Bag Santa Clause
Step 1: Create Santa’s Face:
Turn the paper bag upside down so that the bottom flap becomes Santa’s face.
Glue on googly eyes or draw eyes with a black marker.
Use a brown or pink pom pom for the nose and glue it in the center of the paper bag flap under the eyes. If you don't have any pom poms, cut an oval out of pink or red construction paper and glue that on as the nose instead.
Step 2: Create Santa's Body
Cut a strip of red construction paper for Santa’s suit and glue it to the main body of the paper bag.
Decorate with buttons, glitter, or other embellishments to make it extra special.
Step 3: Make Santa’s Hat:
Cut out a triangle from red construction paper for Santa’s hat.
Attach it to the top of the paper bag, letting it slightly overlap the face.
Add white pom poms or small circles of white paper to the tip of the hat and along the bottom for a festive touch.
Step 4: Add Santa's Beard
Cut out a rounded beard shape from white construction paper, or use cotton balls for a fluffier look.
Glue the beard onto the lower half of the face.
Step 5: Finish the Details:
Add any other additional details that you may be missing, like buttons to his body, arms sticking out the side of the paper bag, etc.
Make It Your Own
Encourage your kids to customize their Santa with these fun ideas:
Add Personality: Let your kids decide on Santa’s expression—will he be smiling, winking, or laughing with joy?
Get Glittery: Add a sprinkle of glitter to the hat or suit for some extra holiday sparkle.
Use Textured Materials: Swap out construction paper for felt or fabric scraps for a unique look.
Create a Family of Characters: Make an entire set of holiday puppets, including elves, reindeer, and Mrs. Claus, to accompany Santa!
